Tombstone Tuesday - Robert Sporie

This is the tombstone for my great grandfather.  Robert is the father of my maternal grandfather.  He was born 20 May 1869 in Bern, Switzerland.  Depending on the census, he immigrated to the United States in 1883 or 1886 (I haven't been able to find his immigration papers).  He became a naturalized citizen about 1900.

The first census he shows up on is the 1900 U.S. Federal Census.  He's living in Rome, Oneida County, New York, and is 31 years old.  By the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, he's living in Durham, Androscroggin County, Maine, where he will reside for the rest of his life.

Robert died 31 Jan 1926 in Durham, Androscroggin County, Maine at the age of 56.  He's buried at Friend's Cemetery.

Sunday's Obituary - Clarence Wesley Lusby

This is the obituary for my paternal grandfather, Clarence Wesley Lusby.  He was born in 1913 in Washington, DC, and died in 1966 in Bladensburg, Maryland.  I don't know what paper this obit came out if.  It was a clipping I found in my parent's photo album.  I'm going to assume it came out of a Maryland newspaper because I have all the version that were published in the DC papers, and none of them resembled this one.  I hope that one day I'll be able to find it online.

According to notes I have on the family research his sister did, he died at the same age as his mother and of the same diagnosis, heart disease.  He died 3 years after I was born, so I don't remember him at all.

At his request, his ashes were scattered over the Chesapeake Bay.

Wednesday's Child - Robert Armistead

Robert Armistead was my 2nd great grand uncle.  He was born about 1862 in Washington, DC, and was the fourth child and third son of William Christie Armistead and Sarah Ann Simpson.  His cause of death was an accidental drowning at the age of 12.  He died 23 Jul 1874.  His older brother, William, died 12 years earlier at the age of 5.  They are buried together, along with a sister, Julia, who died in 1893 at the age of 23.  All three of them are buried at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.

Below is a picture of their headstone, which is quite difficult to make out.

I was able to find a mention of Robert's drowning in The National Republican, that was published on 24 Jul 1874.

Here is a transcription of the article from the newspaper:

ACCIDENTAL DROWNING.
Yesterday afternoon, about 2:30 o'clock, Robert Armistead, aged thirteen years, and two other boys, went in to bathe in the Eastern branch at the foot of Fourteenth street southwest, and off the old ferry wharf.  While enjoying themselves in the water young Armistead got too far out in the current, which was running neath the surface and drowned before assistance could be rendered him.  Efforts were immediately made to recover the body, which was accomplished in a short time afterwards by Mr. J. Moulton, and it was removed to the residence of the father, No. 1107 Ninth street southeast.  Coroner D.C. Patterson was notified, but after viewing the body deemed an inquest unnecessary, as it was evident that death resulted from accidental drowning.  The funeral will take place from his late residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock.

Surname Saturday - Boa

It's Saturday once again, so that means it's Surname Saturday, a daily blogging prompt from Genabloggers.  Since I'm going alphabetically through the names in my family tree, I'm at "B".  The Boa line runs on my mom's side of the tree through her mother.  This line also runs back to Prince Edward Island in Canada to Scotland.

I haven't done a lot of work on this line, and the information I have is from research done by other family members.  When my mom gave me the folder with all the research papers in it, there wasn't any documentation.  I have some of it documents, mainly in the US and Canada.  Slowly but surely I'll have the rest of the line documented.  I'm looking forward to finding out how early in Scotland the Boa line originated and if they came from anywhere else.

I've always felt an affinity to Scotland, and now I know why.

Tombstone Tuesday - Frank W. Raitz

Today is Tombstone Tuesday, one of the many blogging prompts over at Geneabloggers.  Today, I'm sharing the tombstone of my paternal 2x great grandfather.  He is the father of my great grandmother, Edith Irene (Raitz) Lusby.

Photo courtesy of Dayle Durrer Dooley

All I know about Frank is that he was born about 1859 in Germany and died on 14 Feb 1930 in Washington, DC.  He's buried, with his wife, Frances May (Thompson) Raitz at Congressional Cemetery.  He immigrated to the United states about 1863 at the age of 4 (I haven't been able to find him on a passenger list yet and I don't know who his parents are).  The first census I've been able to find him on is the 1900 census.  If he did arrive in the 1860's, I should be able to find him on the 1870 and 1880 census.  I also have no clue as to what port they arrived at.

If anyone reading this has any connection to Frank Raitz or his wife, please contact me.  Thanks.

Census Sunday - 1900 U.S. Census for Rome, Oneida County, New York

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census (enumerated on the 12th and 13th June 1900) is the first census that my great grandfather, Robert Sporie, appears on.  He was born in Switzerland in 1869 and immigrated to the United States in either 1883 (according to the 1900 census) or 1886 (according to the 1910 census).

Ancestry.com Census Image
At the time of the census, Robert is living on Cross Road with his wife Louise Spori and one other adult, Chris Grundisch, who's listed as his brother-in-law.  They are enumberated in Dwelling 283, Family 316, and on Lines 30 - 36.

The extracted information for the family, with an enumeration date of the 12th and 13th Jun 1900 by William A. Fitch is as follows:

  • Robert Spori, head of house, white, male, born May 1869, age 31, married 8 years, birthplace Switzerland, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, immigrated to US 1883, has been in the US for 17 years, naturalization status Pa (papers submitted), occupation is farmer, can read, write, and speak english, owns home, mortgage, farm, #30 on the farm schedule.
  • Louise Spori, wife, white, female, born Jan 1871, age 29, married 8 years, mother of 4 children, 4 children living, birthplace Switzerland, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, immigrated to US 1889, been in US for 11 years, cannot read, cannot write, can speak english.
  • Walter R. Spori, son, white, male, born Jan 1893, age 7, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, can read, write, and speak english.
  • Clara Spori, daughter, white, female, born Dec 1894, age 5, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Freda Spori, daughter, white, female, born Mar 1896, age 4, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Martha Spori, daughter, white, femals, born Mar 1898, age 2, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Chris Grundisch, brother-in-law, white, male, born Jan 1869, age 31, single, birthplace Switzerland, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, occupation is day laborer, can read, write, and speak english.
I have yet to find any information on his immigration or naturalization, but then I'm just starting to look.  I'm also trying to locate records of his marriage to Louise as they were married in New York, in Oneida County I believe.

One interesting note, by the time the 1910 census rolled around, Robert had added an "e" to the end of his surname, making is Sporie.  My mom told me this was because people kept pronouncing is Spor-eye, instead of Spor-ee.

Surname Saturday - Armistead

Today I make my first post for Surname Saturday, a daily blogging prompt from Genabloggers.  I thought long and hard about which name highlight, but couldn't make a decision.  So I decided to just go alphabetically, starting with "A".

The Armistead line runs on my dad's side with his mother, Elizabeth Armistead Hennings.  I don't have much in the way of information on this line, and I have only been able to go back to 1830, which is about when my 3rd great grandfather, William Christie Armistead, was born.

All that I have been able to confirm about him is his full name, his children, and that he spent his entire life in Washington, DC.  There is some question about where he was born as some records indicate Washington, DC and some indicate Virginia.  I do know there is a lot of Armistead's in both Virginia and Washington, DC, but so far I haven't been able to find a common link.  If only I could find out who his parents were.  His burial record just lists his father's last name, and I haven't a clue as to who is mother was (but I'm assuming right now that her maiden name might have been Christie).

Anyway, here is my link to the Armistead's of Washington, DC.

Workday Wednesdays - Arthur Cole Hennings

Arthur Cole Hennings (cira 1950's)

My first entry for Workday Wednesday is my paternal great grandfather, Arthur Cole Hennings.  He was born in Corning, New York in 1892.  I'm not sure yet what brought his family down to Washington, DC, but the first census he shows up on is the 1900 U.S. Federal Census.  At that time he was 8 years old and living in Nanjemoy, Charles County, Maryland.  Of course, being 8 years old, his only occupation was going to school.  I looked at what his father's occupation was, and he's listed as a machinist and owning a farm.

According to the 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Washington City, District of Columbia, Arthur was 17 years old and working as a Stenographer in an office.

In 1917, he registered for the WWI Draft, and on his registration card he's listed as 24 years old and the Manager of the Mail Order Dept. at Andrews Print Company in Washington, DC.

In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census  for Washington Magisterial District, Alexandria, Virginia, Arthur was 27 years old and working as a Wholesale Manager for a paper company.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Fresno, California, Arthur was 37 years old and working as a salesman for a paper company.  His earnings were listed at $4,590.

In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census for Fresno, California, Arthur was 47 years, and was a Printer at a print company.

In 1942, he registered for the WWII Draft, and on his registration card he's listed as 49 years old, and owning the Advertising Specialty Company in Fresno, California.  The census also shows that the highest grade of school that he completed was 7th grade.

He died in 1966, and in his obituary it says that he operated an envelope company and a wholesale print company for 30 years, which he sold in 1959.  What I found particularly interesting was it also said that he was a one-time actor.

Last weekend while I was searching through some old Washington, DC newspapers online using "Hennings", I found references to a Hennings, and an Arthur Hennings performing around the city.  I didn't think that this was my great grandfather, so I ignored them.  Now I'm going to go back and take a look at those listings again and save them.

I wondered what brought him out to California.  Did he go thinking of maybe trying to break into acting there and becoming a "star".  Did he do any acting in California?  I'll have see what I can find out with further research now that I have this new clue about my great grandfather.

Sunday's Obituary - Benjamin Franklin Lusby

This is the obituary of my great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Lusby.  I've always referred to him as Poppy.  He was my dad's grandfather, and he has fond memories of staying with him in the summers down in Lively, Virginia in Lancaster County.  Unfortunately, I was 5 years old when he died, and have no real memory of him.  But my parents do have a picture or two of him that I recently scanned.  I've enjoyed learning about his life as I research the Lusby branch of my family tree.

The Washington Post, June 1968

Here's a picture of him with his first wife, Edith Irene, in the early 1940's.

Brick Wall #1: John Lusby

When I told my parents I was going to trace my family tree, my mom gave me the report that my Great Aunt Edie (Edythmae Lusby Johnston) had compiled that started with my 2x great grandfather, Thomas Washington Lusby.  The report traced this branch of the Lusby Family down to what was current in 1993, which is when a Lusby Family Reunion was held near the original homeplace in Robley, Virginia.  The report included all her research sources, notes from the Family Bible, and conversations with other family members.  Also included in the report was a snippet of information about Thomas' father, John (my 3x great grandfather).  Thus, I pretty much started my journey with a brick wall - John Lusby.

Since I couldn't find out anything on John at all, I decided to start with Thomas and loaded all the information from my Aunt Edie's research into the tree I started at Ancestry.com.  Then I decided to come back to John, and try again.  Nothing.  So I'd move one to a different branch or work on my mother's side of the tree.  But I'd always come back to John, and find absolutely nothing.

In everything I have read about doing genealogical research and dealing with brick walls, they all say to start with what you know and to write down what you know.  I have recently returned to John Lusby, and did just that.  So between my Aunt Edie and a professional genealogist that I hired a few years ago to help me, this is what I know about John Lusby.

  • W. John Lusby married Margaret B. Self on 25 Dec 1833 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.  The minister was Thomas M. Washington.  The bride's parents were listed as Moses and Maget Self.  (Source:  Marriage Bonds, 1830-1833, Vol. 11, page 33, 41, 41a, Westmoreland County, Virginia)
  • John Lusby married Margaret Self, Dec. 1833; Daniel Hardwick, Sec.  (Source:  Marriage License Bonds of Westmoreland County, Virginia from 1783-1850).
  • John T. Lusby is listed as the father and Margaret B. Self is listed as the mother of Thomas W. Lusby on the record of his marriage to to his first wife, Martha A. Dunaway on 22 Jan 1857.  I found the record on FamilySearch.org.  (Source:  Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940)
  • John Lusby is listed as the father and Margaret Lusby is listed as the mother of Thomas W. Lusby on the record of his marriage to his second wife, Fannie J. Dameron on 25 May 1870.  I found the record on FamilySearch.org.   (Source:  Virginia Marriages, 1875-1940)
  • John Lusby died before 1845, but I can't find any reference to it on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org.  I'm basing this on the fact that Margaret B. Lusby married James B. Moxley on 7 Dec 1845.  Daniel Hardwick, Sec.  The minister was Rev. Elijah L. Williams.  (Source:  Marriages of Richmond County, Virginia, 1668-1853)
  • On the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia, Thomas Lusby, age 15, male, pauper is enumerated with James B. Moxley, Margaret B. Moxley, Leviticus Lusby (4), and James Edwin Moxley (1).
So that's all I have on John Lusby.  Whenever I did a search, I'd find a lot of John Lusby's all over the place, I could never connect the dots.  He had to have come from somewhere, didn't he?  I'm sure he didn't just drop out of the sky.

There is a big group of Lusby's in Maryland, and I thought that maybe I could link my Lusby's to them.  Jim Hartung runs a genealogy database full of Lusby's from Maryland, North Carolina, and Kentucky.  I've searched that database more than once, but none of mine are in there, and I couldn't find a link to them from my line.

So when I hired the genealogist to help me, she was able to confirm the information I had already found, and  believed that one of the records she had found is evidence of a tie between my Lusby's in Virginia and the line from Cecil County, Maryland.  It's a very thin line right now, but it's a place to start.  What do you think?

What the genealogist found is as follows:

  • A death record for a Nicholas Lusby who died in Richmond County, Virginia on 19 Mar 1867 at the age of 78.  The record lists his birth date as 1789, birthplace as the Eastern Shore.  He's white, and at the time of his death, he was married to a Rebecca Lusby.  His father was listed as Ed Lusby.  (Source:  Virginia, Deaths and Burials, 1853-1912)
  • A record of a John Lusby, born 30 Aug 1782 in Saint Stephen's Parish, Cecil County, Maryland.  The father listed is Edward Lusby and the mother listed is Ann.  (Source:  Maryland, Births and Christenings, 1650-1995)
  • A record of John, son of Edward Lusby and Ann, his wife, born 30th Aug 1782.  It also shows a record of Nicholas, son of Edward Lusby and Ann, his wife, born 4th Jan 1791.  (Source:  A Copy of the Records of St. Stephens Parish (Episcopal), Cecilton, Maryland)
So what conclusions can I draw from the above?  If this John Lusby is the one I'm looking for, he would have been about 51 years old when he married Margaret Self in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1833.  Maybe that would explain why he only had one child with Margaret.

But it raises a whole slew of additional questions:  What brought him to the Northern Neck Region of Virginia from the Eastern Shore of Maryland?  Is Nicholas Lusby really the brother of my John Lusby?  Did John have a wife or two before Margaret?  Were there other children with those previous marriages?  Do I have enough to continue this line of research or should I stick to searching for a John Lusby born in Virginia?

I have a copy (from the genealogist) of Cecil County, Maryland Marriage References 1674-1824, and there are two more John Lusby's that could be possibilities:

  • Lusby, John, m. Ann Walmsley, circa 26 Sep 1805.
  • Lusby, John, son of Thomas Lusby, m. Emeline Neal, circa 3 Oct 1815

Anyone reading this, what do you think?  Is there enough there to warrant further investigation?  I think there is, but am looking for suggestions on what do to next?
