Census Sunday - 1881 Census of Canada for Prince County, Prince Edward Island

Today I bring you the 1881 Census of Canada for Prince County, Prince Edward Island, reporting on my 2nd great grandfather, James William Tanton.  The Tanton line runs on my maternal side.

James William Tanton was born on Prince Edward Island about 1830.  His father, George Davis Tanton, immigrated from England around 1816.

When compared to the 1880 US Federal Census, this census from Canada falls short in the information area (at least in my opinion), and there was no enumeration date.

The information provided is as follows:

Prince County, Prince Edward Island, District 1, Sub-District Lot 17; Dwelling 224, Family 224

  • James Tanton, male, age 51, Born: Prince Edward Island, Religion:  Church of England, Origin:  English, Occupation:  Farmer, married.
  • Isabella Tanton, female, age 35, Born:  Prince Edward Island, Religion:  Church of England, Origin:  Scotch, no occupation listed.

  • Bradford Tanton, male, age 2, Born:  Prince Edward Island, Religion:  Church of England, Origin:  English.

I have not done a lot of research on this line, other than transfer what has been done by a distant cousin who still live on the Island.  As I add the information, I'm documenting it as I go along since all I have the descendant report that starts with my 6th great grandfather.

Census Sunday - 1900 U.S. Census for Rome, Oneida County, New York

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census (enumerated on the 12th and 13th June 1900) is the first census that my great grandfather, Robert Sporie, appears on.  He was born in Switzerland in 1869 and immigrated to the United States in either 1883 (according to the 1900 census) or 1886 (according to the 1910 census).

At the time of the census, Robert is living on Cross Road with his wife Louise Spori and one other adult, Chris Grundisch, who's listed as his brother-in-law.  They are enumberated in Dwelling 283, Family 316, and on Lines 30 - 36.

The extracted information for the family, with an enumeration date of the 12th and 13th Jun 1900 by William A. Fitch is as follows:

  • Louise Spori, wife, white, female, born Jan 1871, age 29, married 8 years, mother of 4 children, 4 children living, birthplace Switzerland, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, immigrated to US 1889, been in US for 11 years, cannot read, cannot write, can speak english.
  • Walter R. Spori, son, white, male, born Jan 1893, age 7, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, can read, write, and speak english.
  • Clara Spori, daughter, white, female, born Dec 1894, age 5, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Freda Spori, daughter, white, female, born Mar 1896, age 4, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Martha Spori, daughter, white, femals, born Mar 1898, age 2, single, birthplace New York, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland.
  • Chris Grundisch, brother-in-law, white, male, born Jan 1869, age 31, single, birthplace Switzerland, father's birthplace Switzerland, mother's birthplace Switzerland, occupation is day laborer, can read, write, and speak english.
I have yet to find any information on his immigration or naturalization, but then I'm just starting to look.  I'm also trying to locate records of his marriage to Louise as they were married in New York, in Oneida County I believe.

One interesting note, by the time the 1910 census rolled around, Robert had added an "e" to the end of his surname, making is Sporie.  My mom told me this was because people kept pronouncing is Spor-eye, instead of Spor-ee.
