One interesting note, by the time the 1910 census rolled around, Robert had added an "e" to the end of his surname, making is Sporie. My mom told me this was because people kept pronouncing is Spor-eye, instead of Spor-ee.
I don't know much about US research but have one brickwall who was evidently born in US. Was the census done in every state? Besides ancestry, is there a place to view them?
ReplyDeleteYes, every 10 years a nation-wide census is done by the US Government. You can also find them indexed at familysearch.org. The indexed page will give you the basic information. Sometimes there will be a link to the actual census image. At time that image link will take to to the image at the familysearch.org site or to ancestry or maybe even archives.com. The last 2 are paid sites.
ReplyDeleteThe only census you can't find is the 1890 as most of it was destroyed in a fire.
The census aren't made public for 72 years, so the latest one that can be seen is from 1940. That became available April 2012.
Hope that helps.
